Uxi ● Taperebá ● Araçá ● Cupuaçú ● Blueberry

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

What do all these things have in common? Well they are all fruits or nuts and except for the blueberry, which has never even been heard of here, they are all Amazonian products which are usually not even found in the rest of Brazil. These guys don't even have translations so it is hard to attempt to even explain what they are or what they taste like. All I can say is that they are yummy! Here I am trying an uxi ice cream. Needless to say, needing to sample all the different flavours is a pretty good excuse to eat ice cream everyday. For pictures of an uxi and several other Amazonian fruit, click here.

And what does Uxi taste like--tapioca? I had trouble enough with soursop, mamey apples and the dozens of varieties of mangos in Central America, not to mention sugar bananas and the like...

Creamed: Mmmmmm tapioca. I love tapioca. In cakes, bread, crepes, ice cream, you name it, I love it! The uxi is more of a light nutty, slightly fruity taste. Or was that the glass of red that I had the other night? A friend of mine has a mango tree that currently thinks that it is December and hence is producing mountains of fruit. Yesterday she gave me fifteen mangos!! Now I need a mango chutney recipe!

From our Charleston Receipts 1950 cookbook:
4 pounds of mangoes; 2 tbsp. white mustard seed; 1 tbsp. ground dried chile pepper; 1 pound preserved ginger in syrup; 2 lbs. of sugar; 2 quarts vinegar; 1 1/2 cups raisins; 1 clove garlic.
Peel and cut fruit and add one qt. vinegar. Boil for 20 min. Combine sugar and 2nd qt of vinegar and boil until it is a thick syrup. Pour off most of the liquid from the fruit and add to this syrup. Boil this combination until it is thick. Combine this thick syrup with the rest of the ingredients and fruit except the ginger, and cook 30 min. Add chopped ginger and its syrup and cook 10 min. longer. Bottle. The flavor is improved if it is placed in the sun for several days. This India chutney is almost identical with very famous brand of chutney. Yield: 4-5 pints.
